Why is evolution under attack?

The pope is gathering some advisors together to discuss the role of evolution in the Catholic church.  This pope is likely to change the position of the church to one in support of “Intelligent Design.”  This change will not occur overnight, but as long as this pope is in power, he will move the church in this direction.

According to a CBS News poll, most people in the United States believe humans were created by God.  Another 27% believe that God at least set the evolutionary process in motion.  That means that 4 out of 5 Americans believe that we are here because of divine intervention.  The pope sides with the majority of Americans on this one.

Why is it, that despite 50+ years of evolution indoctrination in our public schools, that a vast majority still believe that we live in a world designed by a creative, intelligent force?

Assume for a moment that you believe that every living thing on earth came to be by chance.  That even humanity is a happy accident of chemical composition, genetic mutation and environmental probability.  If we are here, on earth, by the convergence of a whole series of unlikely events, then what is our purpose?  To follow the logic, our purpose on earth is to provide the foundation for the next evolution, whatever that may be.  Assuming that we are only here to provide the basis for the next phase of evolution, then our existence is purely one of birth, reproduction, and death.  This view has hope only in the generations we spawn.  This view rests its hope in the works of man.

Look around the world today and see the works of man.  Everywhere we look, men are killing one another.  There are wars, and rumors of wars.  Kidnappings, rape, child molestation, slavery, genocide, and on and on.  Even in our so-called model societies, there is a dark side of humanity that threatens our very image of what humanity should be.  It’s no wonder that so much of our modern society is medicated to alleviate the depression that sets in when we begin to realize that the future of humanity rests with humanity.

Intelligent design, and creationism, place a hope within us that evolution cannot.  Intelligent design implies that there is no more evolution, we are as good as it gets.  Our existence on this earth then becomes more than birth, reproduction, death.  The basic conclusion of intelligent design is that we have a purpose here and now, not just to provide the foundation for some future creature.  With this purpose for our existence that is more than the sum of our own works, we no longer depend on the works of man, but now we are freed from that tremendous burden and can place at least part of the responsibility to the original designer.  If the original designer was smart enough to design us and every living thing around us, then surely he would know that his designs would not self-destruct.

The End of Conflict?

Most people shy away from conflict.  Conflict causes bad feelings.  Conflict can hurt.  Conflict disturbs the status quo and forces us to change. Conflict leaves us with a feeling of uneasiness or uncertainty. And, as a rule, people do not like that feeling.

As a result, people like Joe Klein of Time Magazine write pieces like the one he wrote yesterday, “Three Cheers for Triangulation: What Leiberman’s Primary Defeat Means.“  In closing out his argument for moderation in politics Mr. Klein says,

[Eli] Pariser [Executive Director for ] calls for an era of “bolder, principle-driven politics.” But we’ve suffered all the boldness we can handle these past six years.

The Immorality of the Minimum Wage

It is not hard to find an economic argument against the minimum wage.  It is not hard because the vast majority of economists agree that a minimum wage can actually decrease employment levels, especially within the groups most in need of employment.  You can even apply morality to the economic argument that if someone can and will work for a wage, government should not prevent a willing worker, but should assist that worker in getting a job by removing the artificial wage.

But the minimum wage is immoral from another perspective as well.
